DAYS 1-3: Pow-Wow in Powell
Lake Powell (Bullfrog marina)
Lake Powell, the largest man-made lake in North America, nestled between a vast network of red canyons, is a vacation in itself, but it also makes for a nice three-day break from hiking. Three days is also the minimum duration you can rent a houseboat, which you will you use to explore the lake by day and sleep under the stars by night. You can rent the boat and embark from Bullfrog Marina. (The other two ports are in neighboring Arizona.)
Note: Houseboat rentals during peak season (June-September) can sell out up to a year in advance so plan accordingly. It might not be the best option for budget travelers, as houseboats range from $1,800 to $7,200, depending on the size. You can still enjoy Lake Powell without a houseboat. There are many hotels, motels and bed & breakfasts to choose from. You can also rent small boats for daytime expeditions.
Activities in the Lake:
There are plenty of sights to see on southern Lake Powell in Arizona, which is why it's a must-see on your Arizona itinerary. In northern Lake Powell, there are several places worth visiting, but you should aim to spend most of your time boating the lake, swimming, taking in the surrounding sights, and just straight up relaxing.
Note: There are several restaurants near the marina as well as markets stocked with food and supplies, for those of you who prefer a real water-camping experience.
